What is Insomnia?
Insomnia refers to difficulty getting to sleep, staying sleep, or an inability to obtain restful sleep. Insomnia is by far the most common form of sleep disturbance. It is estimated that in any given year 30-50% of people will experience symptoms of insomnia and 10-15% of people experience chronic insomnia. Insomnia is quite complex and can be associated with a variety of factors including stress, sleep scheduling practices, medical illness, medications, psychiatric illness, and other sleep disorders. Insomnia can have a variety of consequences including problems with fatigue, attention, and concentration that can impair ones work performance. Chronic insomnia can also lead to mood disturbance including excessive worry, stress, anxiety, and even depression.
